NET and down time
When tutors go home we continue to keep our son engaged by involving him in daily quick routine activities (eg. Finding matching socks, making pancakes, going for a walk). We lower the pace, enjoy sharing experiences as a family and give him simple achievable tasks to perform. He loves helping us and we teach him functional skills at the same time. Start simple and brief and build up from there.
Other family members are now happier to help as I've removed all the theory, jargon and stress from down time. I've realised it is okay for me to sit and have a cup of tea whilst my little boy relaxes watching a favourite DVD too. Balance is the key :)
We had a fun time this morning doing crawling races with my baby niece! It feels natural and it's fun!
Relaxing before bed
Relaxing with dad as part of his listening program (with his eyes closed!). We used ABA to work on cooperation skills. We use classical music too. This is a lovely way to end the day before going up to get ready for bed.
Involve your kids!
It's half term and you need to get housework done and little one is stimming and bored? That's always a concern to me as I need to keep him engaged and busy. Involve the kids!
We had a lovely kitchen tidy up session just now. :)
We had fun doing intraverbal questions, function, features and class. Plus working as a team and experience sharing!
Pancake recipe for cooking NET (using gluten and casein free ingredients)
1 cup of GF flour (or ordinary plain flour if not gf)
1 egg (no egg works fine)
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
2 table spoons of sun flower oil
1.5 cups of coconut or another dairy free milk
1/4 teaspoon of salt
Organise the work top with all you need beforehand. Get your child to help you Mix all the ingredients together and help you pour the mixture into the pan. I use coconut oil to fry them and melt it so my son can brush it in the pan. The pan needs to be hot so you need to be careful.
The recipe makes about 5 pancakes and we serve them with honey.
My little boy loves the whole process, especially when I flip it! there's an episode of peppa pig which is about making pancakes and you might want to start with it.
Lots and lots of opportunities to do Manding, receptive and intraverbal targets and it's so tasty!
Pancake reading activity- teaching your child to read a recipe
This is a good way to start teaching children slowly to do a bit of cooking and that we can guide ourselves with recipes and make our own food.
We can always transfer memory skills that our children already have (e.g. ability to operate devices like media) into more functional ones to give our kids more independence in the future.
I kept it simple and we will teach my child to read separate words and the recipe in full during sessions before we put it in with the NET plan, otherwise, it will be too much for him to take in.
I hope you have fun reading and cooking with your child!!
